Jelena Jankovic and Andrea Petkovic were victorious as doubles partners Saturday, but only one of them could come out on top of their head-to-head matchup in singles Sunday. It was higher-ranked Jankovic who emerged victorious in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
"One of us had to win, and today it was me," Jankovic said. "It's not fun playing your doubles partner, especially in the first round."
It couldn't have been much fun for Petkovic either, who often screamed out of frustration and at points even slammed her racket. Late in the second set, she was assessed an obscenity warning by the chair umpire for something she yelled.
The reasons for her aggravation were evident, as Petkovic was outmatched from the start and just couldn't catch a break. On the pivotal point in the second set, which ultimately gave Jankovic a 5-3 lead, Petkovic hung tough in a heated rally before hitting a forehand that caught the tape atop the net and fell back.
Jankovic dominted in the first set, setting the tone from the start, managing to run Petkovic all over the court, giving her little chance to steal games.
"I think I played pretty well in the first set and I was in control," Jankovic said. "In the second set, my serve was not as good. She had a lot of opportunities, and she was able to, you know, get some strikes and opportunities to attack. But I was able to stay strong and hang in there in those tough moments and win the second set."
Jankovic's next challenger is Monica Niculescu, who manhandled the 16-seed Lucie Safarova on Sunday, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Jankovic has won all four times the two have met previously, but said she isn't taking her next opponent lightly.
"She's a tricky opponent," Jankovic said. "She plays a lot of slices and drop shots and it's going to be a tough match."
