FEDERER CELEBRATES 15 YEARS WITH ATP RANKING
On this Monday 15 years ago, Roger Federer appeared in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for the first time.

The Swiss debuted at joint World No. 803 on 22 September 1997 after a solid showing at a four-week satellite circuit, culminating in a semi-final appearance at the Switzerland 1 Masters in Bossonnens to earn 12 ATP points. In the first week of the Satellite, Federer lost to future contemporary Yves Allegro, a countryman and friend he would later partner to two ATP World Tour doubles titles and a round of 16 showing at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

A member of Federer's coaching team, Severin Luthi, also competed at the same satellite circuit, reaching one final to jump 374 places to equal No. 753. Luthi is the current Davis Cup captain for Switzerland.

Among the players ranked around Federer at the time of his rankings debut was future two-time Grand Slam singles champion Lleyton Hewitt, who coincidentally dropped five spots to No. 808, but held the same number of points as his rival. Other notable names near Federer included future fellow World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero (No. 756), Juan Ignacio Chela (No. 762), Paradorn Srichaphan (No. 769), Bjorn Phau (No. 830), Xavier Malisse (No. 854) and Simon Aspelin (No. 857).

Ooooh Roger :inlove:

The official note from Chinese Press:#Federer in Shanghai on 4 October

Image
His first year as Pro: Roger Federer played in the 1998 Gstaad tournament against the unknown Argentinian Lucas Arnold - and lost 4:6, 4:6.

It is the 22nd of September 1997: Swiss sports history would be written. At this point, however, nobody knows that. It is the day that Roger Federer enters the world stage of tennis. He appears on the ATP world rankings for the first time - and that was as number 803. Nobody in the world, not even in Switzerland, is taking the 16-year old Basel resident really seriously.

His biggest success to date had been in May of the same year when he won the major Juniors Tournament of Prato. His later Davis-Cup-colleague Yves Allegro, who lived with Federer at the Training Center of Swiss Tennis, once said: "I thought to myself at that time, if he can win such a tournament at 16, then he is a great player."

Parents told him where to go!

Shortly after this success, Federer completed his nine years of compulsory schooling and devoted himself entirely to tennis. Not an easy decision - not even for the parents. "Everyone told us how talented Roger was. But we wanted to see results. We have always made it clear that we were not able financially to support Roger for ten years, so he popped up to around No. 400, " explained his mother, Lynette Federer, in the biography of her son written by René Stauffer.

The then 16-year-old takes this to heart. He has clearly higher goals. That was visible at an early stage. As juniors, Federer and his colleagues had to write down their career goal. All had written down the Top 100, only the futur exceptional athlete chose with confidence the No. 1, Allegro recounted years later.

Top 100 in two years

Almost an year later the Swiss prodigy made his debut on the ATP tour in Gstaad. 15 months later he appeared for the first time among the top 100 players in the world where he has stayed permanently from 11 October 1999 till now.

It took Federer only an additional two and a half years to make the jump to top 10 (March 2002). He needed several months to consolidate his presence among the best in the world but since 14 October 2002 he has not allowed anyone to take him out of there. To that effect, the Swiss may soon celebrate his ten years stay in the top 10.

From that point his rise was unstoppable. In the summer of the following year he won his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon and closed the successful season with a triumph at the Masters, the World Tour Finals of today. The Roger Federer era had started: by winning the Australian Open he accomplished his great goal and conquered the tennis throne. He stayed there for 237 unbelievable weeks which is a record. Meanwhile he has reached 296 weeks as number 1 in total - this is also a record. Roger Federer and the ATP tennis rankings are definitely a good pair.
