"It's never easy to play the first few matches on grass so I'm always happy when I come through the first rounds because otherwise Wimbledon would be just around the corner. It takes away a bit pressure.
Cedric had already played a match, it could have been an advantage and that's why I knew about the danger, I had practised a lot with him and he can play very well but my slice worked well against him today so I'm very satisfied in the end.
It's very relaxing here, everyone feels it here, not just the players but also the fans, everyone is in a good mood. Of course it's even better when the weather is good which has been the case today and that's why I like to take 15 minutes for the fans, the day has 24 hours so 15 minutes are not a lot, I enjoy doing it.
I'm not here every year and some of the people come from afar and hope to maybe not just watch me play but also to discuss a bit or to ... touch me (crowd going crazy) or to talk to me and I take part in that, that's no problem."
"Do your girls say something like your backhand down the line was not good today?"
"Today they would probably rather say that the serve was not so good. They don't ask whether I won or lost, not yet at least, it's not far away. But I think they like to come to the practice or to the matches.
There's a lot to do here, here in Halle. There are different things to do in the big cities but here where it's calm you can go to the forest or go swimming, there's a lot to do and they have fun being away from the big cities where there are lots of cars and it's very dangerous.
It's very pleasant here and we enjoy it as a family.
I'm looking forward to playing against Zverev, he plays classic grass tennis, still goes to the net. I'm happy there are still a few of these players. So the match will definitely a bit different than today's match against Stebe who doesn't like to come to the net so I'm looking forward to that.
I played against Mischa once in Rome a long time ago, he played very well there, he is talented, you have to be careful there but I think I have 1 day break so I can still practise a bit and prepare well for the match."
"He won the peak points in the first set and I in the 2nd and 3rd set.In the course of the match I got the upper hand from the baseline.I am happy with my consistency in the match...I have not won any titles this year yet so I m very motivated and eager to win this one here "
"It was a great match for me to play and then also to win," said Federer. "Tommy can play really well here. We saw that last year here and in previous years he’s also been successful. I’m very happy that I was able to maintain really a high level of play.
"After losing the first set, there’s not that much margin anymore. I think he won most of the big points in the first set. Then in the second and third I was able to turn it around and win the big points myself. So, it was a big, good win for me. And I thought the quality was also extremely high."
“With Federer, it’s like you’re at the net and you think ‘oh why did I even come here?’ Because his preparation for the shot is unbelievable. My coach said that with him, he’s always on the ground, he’s always stable, he’s never off balance and you cannot tell where the hell he’s going to hit the ball. So it was a disadvantage to come to the net today.
“His ball when it travels to the air it has so much stuff on it, like it just only goes through the air but it moves like left and right, it moves like a shank but it’s not a shank. You think it’s going to go long but it’s like two feet inside the baseline. His ball is just phenomenal. The worst is like when you’re at the net you cannot tell where he’s going to go. With most of the players, you can anticipate. Because of his [stance], he can go down the line or crosscourt. You think, ‘okay he went down the line most of the times, so let’s cover down the line.’”
Zverev also revealed his admiration for Federer, disclosing that he follows the Swiss superstar as often as he can.
“I’m a huge fan of Federer, I watch pretty much every match of his,” said Zverev. “When he loses, I never have a feeling he loses matches because he’s not good enough, it’s mainly because he’s either a little bit injured or it’s like a mental thing with him. So, I’m not saying he’s mentally weak (laughs). I’m just saying he’s a phenomenal player, he still is. He still has the game to beat anyone like easily.”
