Lindsey Vonn, the American skier and Olympic downhill gold medalist, is a fan of tennis in general, and Roger Federer in particular. She tells us about how her love for the sport began, her favourite French Open memories, and how skiing resembles tennis.
If you had to compare skiing and tennis, are there some similarities?
I think so, I think mentally there are some similarities. You know, it’s about trusting your ability and staying aggressive. Certain areas like that are very similar to skiing. And it’s also being able to perform under pressure. I guess you could draw that same conclusion with any sport. But when you’re serving for the match or you’re down a break point, you have to be mentally strong and the same with skiing. In the first run, if you have a bad run, you have to be strong enough to come back. I always draw a lot of confidence from what Roger’s been able to do in his career, how mentally strong he’s been able to be. I mean, he was no.1 for so many years in a row, I always thought that was incredibly inspiring. You know, for most of those years, he didn’t have a coach, so that’s always been something that I’ve drawn confidence from.
