Andy Roddick Advising Ryan Harrison Harrison said that Roddick hit within him almost every day while he was training in Austin for three weeks during the off-season.
“He’s been helping a lot,” Harrison told Daily Tennis. “So much at this point is not technical or changing stokes, it’s footwork. Energy management, body management, not wasting time and focus and being smart not to complain about a first serve call at deuce. He’s very much in the loop. He is texting me every day while I’m in Australia and he’s really proactive, I’m fortunate to have the relationship with him that I do.”
Harrison, who spent much of the off-season working on his fitness and claims to have dropped five pounds, has gone back to working with his father, Chip, and just hired a co-coach to travel with him, Tres Davis, who played on the tour for while but never managed to crack the top 400.
When Harrison’s coach in 2012, Grant Doyle, went to take another job, Tres Davis called him and said he’s be willing to give it a go. Coaching is in the Davis family’ blood.
“Its not just a job for him, he’s really invested,” Harrison said. :It’s not a financial thing for him. He wants what’s best for me because he likes me as a person and he wants to prove himself as coach as well. It’s really important that he’s motivated as well.”
Chip Harrison has worked at Florida’s Nick Bollettieri Academy for years but is now traveling with his younger son, Christian, who is a young and promising pro. He will only work at Bollettieri’s when he has off weeks.
Chip and Ryan, both of whom have intense personalities, have mended fences and now they talks every day. Chip also talks to Davis daily.
“He’s not one of those father figures who doesn’t know tennis, he played at a very high level and knows me more than anyone,” Ryan said of Chip, who was top collegiate player. “Part of it is maturity on my part. You get to the point where every thing your dad is telling you seems like criticism and them you get older and you realize that he’s saying things for your best interest. You can have disagreements that can be productive conservations, rather than arguments.”

AIS: Meanwhile, is that an engagement ring on your finger?DC: Yeah yeah, I’m engaged. We have [been engaged] together for a year, but I always just call him my boyfriend, not fiance. We are just waiting, as I would like to have a marriage in summer back home, but there is just no time while I’m playing tennis so we are in no rush to be married.
