Murray, Nadal say players meeting not imminent

SHANGHAI (AP)—Just weeks after raising the possibility of a strike in protest at the crowded tennis calendar, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal acknowledged Tuesday that bringing the top players together to formulate a plan might be difficult.

Murray last month said a meeting would likely take place during this week’s Shanghai Masters, but the withdrawals of Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic seem to have put paid to that.

The No. 4-ranked Murray said Tuesday that co-ordinating players’ schedules wasn’t easy.

“Whether it happens or not, it’s quite a tough thing to do because there’s a lot of players to coordinate and sometimes guys don’t go to the same tournaments,” Murray said.

“Tennis players aren’t always the easiest people to get hold of when they’re not at tournaments.”

Nadal said the timing wasn’t right to have a discussion about a possible next step.

“There is something there, but is not the right moment to talk about it,” he said Tuesday. “Always is better talk about the things when you know exactly what’s going to happen and when you know exactly what we are going to do.”

Murray, Nadal and Andy Roddick have been among the most vocal in urging changes to the packed tennis calendar and the number of events the top players are required to enter each year.

Last November, the ATP decided to extend the tennis offseason from five to seven weeks in response to years of complaints from players about the length of the season and the toll it takes on their bodies.

But other issues came to a head during the rain-soaked U.S. Open, when Nadal, Murray and Roddick voiced concerns about the conditions of the courts and the schedule that forced Nadal to play three matches in three days.

Since then, Roddick has pushed for the creation of a players’ union similar to those in other major pro sports that could act on players’ behalf in negotiations with ATP officials.

After his first-round win in Shanghai on Monday, Roddick said he was hopeful the other players were still “passionate” about forming a collective response to their grievances. He added, however, that a cautious approach was for the best.

“We need to be smart about it and take our time and make sure that it’s well thought out and not be kind of reactionary. But, you know, there is a discussion going on,” he said.

Murray was quoted by the BBC last month saying that a strike was a “possibility,” but he appeared to be in more reconciliatory mood on Tuesday when he said that neither he nor any of the players he had spoken to wanted that outcome.

“It’s so far away from being at that level. The players haven’t even sat down and spoke,” he said.

Murray also stressed that the players only wanted a minimal change to the calendar.

“It’s just a matter of one or two less mandatory events during the year. That’s it,” Murray said. “Doesn’t really need to be a huge change in the calendar or huge change within tennis or the rankings or anything like that.

“It’s just very small things that seem so difficult to get done. I think sometimes the players find it difficult to understand why that is.”

Intervju Petre Kvitove o napredovanju na listi i renkingu karijere( br. 4), kaze
"It's funny, I lost first round in Beijing last week and now I'm even higher."

I ovaj deo mi je bio interesantan. Prvi put cujem da neka teniserka to pominje
"I was practicing well, working on my tactics and my fitness, and I was also doing mental exercises with a mental coach"

Serbia's Nenad Zimonjic celebrated his 500 tour-level doubles matches on Wednesday.
Shanghai Rolex Masters Tournament Director Michael Luevano presented Zimonjic with a cake to mark the milestone. Zimonjic has a 500-253 lifetime doubles record, including 42 titles.

ATPWorldTour.com caught up with the World No. 3 for his thoughts on the achievement.

Intervju
Spoiler: pokaži
What does it mean to reach 500 doubles wins on the ATP World Tour?
It's a really nice achievement. You appreciate every win in any competition, so to get to 500 match wins is amazing. I have to thank all my partners over the years.

How does this milestone rank in comparison to your other top achievements, such as reaching No. 1, winning Davis Cup and claiming three men's doubles Grand Slam titles?

If you don't put yourself in a position to win titles, you don't get to win many matches. I have been fortunate to win Grand Slam championships, [Barclays] ATP World Tour Finals, [ATP World Tour] Masters 1000 and Davis Cup titles, which has helped me reach this milestone.

You and Michael Llodra are enjoying a fine season in the first year of your partnership. What’s one thing you’ve learned through playing with Mika thus far?
It's all about understanding each other to play the best way you can as a team. When I started with Daniel Nestor a few years ago, we played well together straight away. The difference with Mika is that he is still playing high-level singles. We have done a really good job so far, playing very well since [the Mutua Madrid Open] Madrid in May. Most importantly, we are improving with each win and even when we are not playing well, we still find a way to win.

Which shot in your game has contributed most to your success in doubles, and why?
I believe my serve is my best shot. But I think it is because I have always adopted a professional approach to tennis and that has helped me when I have partnered several players. I was switching partners regularly until 2006, when I played with one player full-time. I am still playing for the love of the game and I try to practise harder than ever.

If you could pick just one of your 500 doubles wins to be remembered for, what match would you choose and why?
My two biggest wins that stick in my memory are my first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in 2008, with Daniel, when I played with a broken left hand. Fortunately I have a single-handed backhand, because otherwise it would have been impossible. Secondly, our 2008 Tennis Masters Cup title win over the Bryans, when the year-end World No. 1 team ranking was decided on one match. It also marked my rise to the individual World No. 1 position.

What goals/targets do you have moving forward from this milestone?
I don't have specific goals, but I have the belief that every tournament I enter, I believe if I can play well I have a good chance of beating anybody and winning more titles.

Give us your dream doubles match... teams, venue and score? Your partner and opponents can be any player in history.
I had my idols growing up, but I have never given a fantasy match much thought. I just like to play against the best, whether it be in singles or doubles. That gives me a lot of satisfaction and it pushes me to become better.
