Disgraced Italian speaks out in a video

Riccardo Riccò is back in the headlines in Italy after sneaking into a sportif ride on Sunday to help his friends achieve a better result.

The Italian Olympic Committee suspended Riccò from any form of competition on June 11 after obtaining evidence from the police investigation into the causes of his acute kidney failure in February.

According to one of the event organisers who did not wish to be identified, Riccò joined the 163km Gran Fondo Prologo-Giovanni Lombardi after 10km, appearing from behind a house. He then helped his friends by working to close the gap on a group of breakaway riders.

Despite being told to leave the event by other participants, Riccò rode the whole course and then even had the nerve to use the shower facilities provided by the organisers at the finish in Voghera, near Milan. At that point he was ordered to leave the event by the organisers.

Cyclingnews contacted Riccò to get his version of events but he said laconically: “I don’t think it's worth talking about. Ciao.”

Contador says Giro-Tour double is possible with a stronger team

Spaniard doesn't plan to ride the World Championships

Alberto Contador believes it is possible to win both the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same season, but has suggested he would need “a more powerful team” than he had around him this year. The Saxo Bank-SunGard team leader made his comments after being welcomed home to Pinto in Spain on Wednesday evening.

He claimed that the route of this year's Tour de France did not suit him and admitted things got off to a bad start, as he lost time due a crash on the first stage, and in the stage two team time trial.

"You need to have stages that suit you, either a prologue, a mountain time trial or two time trials. But not a team time trial if you don't have a strong team. With attention to detail like this and good preparation, you can win both the Giro and the Tour in the same season," he said according to Marca.com

Contador dominated the Giro d'Italia in May but struggled in the Tour de France, finishing fifth, 3:57 behind Cadel Evans (BMC).

"I did what I could after that bad day, and was aware that it wasn't my best year in terms of preparation,” he said.

The three-time Tour winner wasn't dissatisfied though, saying: “The truth is that I'm very happy.”

Contador's race plans for the immediate future are unclear, partially because his hearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport has again been postponed and is now set for November.

“It's unfortunate and sad that it's still going on a year later. It needs to be clarified and it is not normal to be so late, but I hope that it ends well and finally ends,” he said.

Contador does not intend to ride the Vuelta a Espana, and does not think he will ride the World Championships either. “It is too early to think about competing at the World Championships. The course is too flat for me and so it's not really worth me preparing for it. It helps though that it is in Denmark and I'm in a Danish team. But for now, the race is not in my plans.”

Evans dreaming of Olympic gold

Australian considering riding road race after Tour de France

Tour de France champion Cadel Evans (BMC) is considering whether to do the Tour-Olympics double in 2012 according to the AAP. Evans rode the Atlanta and Sydney Olympic games as a Mountain Biker before his switch to full-time road riding.

"I don’t know if the course is going to be suitable," Evans told AAP. "But if I can be the man for the job to represent the country, of course I would love to ride."

Evans rode to 14th in the Beijing games in 2008 won by Spaniard Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Though the course proved selective enough fatigue from a heavy schedule meant the former world champion wasn't quite at his best. Having made attempts to win medals at three seperate games and coming up short - 2012 could well be Evans last chance to get the Olympic success he craves.

The BMC rider did however temper his aspirations, commenting that he was more than happy to ride at the service of another member of the Australian squad if the course didn't play to his strengths.

"If it’s a course more suitable to someone else, then it should be for someone else."

The London Olympic Games road race takes place 28th July 2012.

Rolland: The next step is to win the Tour

Pierre Rolland was one of the revelations of this year's Tour de France, and the 24 year-old Frenchman is looking to the future with a certain dose of self-confidence. In a recent chat on Eurosport, he said that he now expects a lot more of himself.

"To win a stage again, or do similar feats [to winning on Alpe d'Huez] should be a minimum. [To win] the polka-dot jersey and maybe even the yellow jersey... I'm not setting limits for myself. Those are definitely possibilities."

The Frenchman however claims he won't chase all the leader's jerseys.

"My goal remains GC," said Rolland. "The next stage is to win the Tour. Can I do it? It's still far too early to say."

Rolland, who rides for the Europcar team, was 11th overall at 10:43 behind Cadel Evans in this year’s Tour de France. He lost time in the first week, notably on stage 7 to Chateauroux where a crash meant a 6:16 loss on GC, then on stage 17 to Pinerolo where he lost 37 seconds to Evans on the final descent.

"I didn't take risks" he said. "I absolutely didn't want to crash. It was my decision [to lose time]." Without these two stages Rolland could in theory have finished as high as eigth in GC, ahead of two-time Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Basso.

The Frenchman was also bullish when asked whether compatriot and teammate Thomas Voeckler could have won the Tour.

"Yes, he could have. If BMC hadn't ridden the day on the day to Saint-Flour and if Contador hadn't ridden so hard on the Télégraphe I think he would’ve certainly had a chance."

Voeckler eventually finished a career-best fourth overall, but his result was part due to the loyal performance from his younger teammate. Rolland first showed his form on Luz-Ardiden and never looked back.

"On the first [mountain top] finish at Luz Ardiden we rode tempo and I was able to stay up there with Thomas and the other favourites. I saw I was near their level. I realised my preparation for the Tour was good, that I was in good form."

Staying with Europcar in 2012

Rolland confirmed he will ride for Europcar again next year as he's under contract until 2013. He played down rumours of any rift between himself and his team leader.

"Thomas and I racing in the same team won't be a problem. We showed it this year, didn't we?"

He also denied a rumour about a possible transfer to BMC, although he did comment that he would’ve been happy to ride for Cadel Evans in this year’s Tour. Rolland also revealed he admires Ivan Basso.

"Several times he came to talk to me and congratulated me on my performances. He's very sincere. Before his doping problems he was the rider I admired the most. I imagined myself having a life like his."

Rolland said he was going to avoid the media spotlight and try and stay as level-headed as possible in the years to come.

"I walked on the Champs [Elysees] last Monday and I was being recognised by people," he revealed. "There is pressure from the media but I know how it works. I'm a rider before anything else. I've got a career plan and I just want to follow it."

Teme sami otvarate kako zelite.
