“I think he was a bit better than me today,” said Federer, a four-time former winner of the bet-at-home Open - German Tennis Championships. “Both sets could have gone either way. So, it’s clearly a pity I couldn’t win either of the sets because I was starting to feel better towards the end of the match. But unfortunately I couldn’t push him further and create more chances today.
“I think the conditions were totally different to last night. It was wet and heavy last night, under the lights,” said Federer, who had battled past Florian Mayer on Friday evening. “It’s a quick turnaround to quick conditions today and a totally different opponent. But that’s no excuse.”
"I don’t think it had much to do with the racket today,” said Federer. “I tried everything I could at this tournament. It’s been a difficult week throughout. But I’m happy I fought through many matches. It gives me the matches I was looking for.
"I was clearly hoping, after winning a tough one yesterday, to somehow get through today and then give myself an opportunity to win the title tomorrow. It’s disappointing, but defeats like that happen sometimes.
"I had a great time. I really enjoyed playing in front of the people here in Hamburg on the Centre Court where I’ve had so many nice moments in my career. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make it to the finals, but nevertheless, I did have four good matches and these are the kind of matches I need."
“It’s good to be back, but it’s been a long time,” he said upon his arrival Monday. “I can’t believe it’s been nine years. It’s been 15 years since my first time here, so time flies on tour. Every day in Switzerland is special - especially playing in this country, I love it. I’m really excited to be starting here in a few days.”
While he stated, “I feel okay,” the 31-year-old Swiss admitted, “It’s been a tricky season, to say the least.”
“Clearly I’ve been asking myself questions of how can I get out of, I wouldn’t call it a slump because I did win Halle in between, and I know that the game’s just around the corner,” he said. “It’s just important that I take the right decisions, how to move forward from here and then how I bounce back, because usually when things don’t go so well I find a way, and that’s what I’m looking for right now.”
“Right now it’s important for me to maintain my ranking, and eventually hopefully when I win big tournaments again or more tournaments, then I can move up again. Right now, I just need to first make sure that I’m healthy, that I do all the right things in practice and then that I can attack again in the matches.”
“I feel like I play home almost everywhere I go; I have so much support all around the world, but there’s nothing like playing in front of your own,” said Federer. “There’s no doubt about it that it’s extra special - more friends and family can come support you and see you. Also once the match is over you go hang out with them more often, so it’s really comfortable as an environment.
“It’s nice, it’s home, it’s the cows, it’s the Alps, it’s everything you know about Switzerland and more, especially here in Gstaad. It’s a very unique event and I’m happy to be part of it again this year.”
Roger Federer @rogerfederer
Excited to start my 2014 Australian summer in # Queensland playing at the @brisbanetennis tournament for the first time.
This is the first time Roger spoke openly about his back problem."Some members of the team thought I shouldn't play. I'm relieved I played more or less correctly without making it worse."
"I thought about it a lot before deciding, afternoon still. I thought I had a chance to win at least one round."
Roger Federer about playing at Rogers Cup 2013, "Not certain I'll play Montreal. I have a week before me. It's a lot of time and little at the same time."
"For the future, we will see in 4-5 days."
"I thought before deciding(to play or not to play today) in the afternoon.I thought I had a chance to win today".
"I took a lot of painkillers last week. Not this week. The problem is a muscle spasm in the back".
The Back spasm wasn't an issue when the decision to play at Hamburg & Gstaad was taken. Just that it became an issue during Hamburg and I couldn't train properly for the last 7-8 days,
"I'm just happy to have played."
What did not go well today?
Federer: First I must recognize Brands' share of merit. He played well when he needed to, served well in the important moments. He was solid. I still had chances. I knew from the outset that the match would be a tough one, especially here at an altitude. I knew Brands could string together several service games easily. He proved that he is dangerous. Regarding my service, I had ups and downs, it has surprised me too. The week has been difficult because of my back problem. Finally, I felt well enough to play and make a correct match but unfortunately it was not enough.
Would you play this game if it was not in Gstaad, in front of your audience?
It's hard to say. Not playing until Thursday helped, it left me one more day for my back. I played almost without pain. I would not have played if I was not expecting to make a turn and then see how my back changed, match after match.
Do you live in this moment the most difficult period of your career?
It is at times a little frustrating. Especially when you have back pain often. After that, I love tennis. That's why I played today. I finally decided after warm-up. I'm glad I could play a game with virtually no pain. Not like last week in Hamburg. That it's nice. Having to explain after the defeats, it's less fun. I prefer not to, but it's part of the job. I did a lot of press conferences during which I was told "you're great, you're the best, you're beautiful." So now it is a little less so, but it does not matter to me.
Where are you with your new racquet?
I can not really analyze where I am since I cannot really play properly. So, it is difficult to feel exactly what will and will not go with this racquet. Here, I knew it would be difficult with altitude. So inevitably the sensations with the balls and racket are very difficult than I met in Hamburg, where it was much slower. I do not know exactly where I am, but anyway, the important thing is first to recover. Ensure that the back gets better. That means plenty of exercise. And then I can train again thoroughly. We'll see if that's enough for Montreal. And if that does not do it for Montreal, I have one more week before Cincinnati. The program we'll see. And the racquet, consideration should be given, but there are more important things at this time.
I am disappointed not to be playing in Montreal next week. It is a great tournament with amazing fans. I look forward to competing there in the future.
Federer : "Thanks so much to all my fans for the bday wishes! @tennisfangirl, @teamfederinka, the video you (& the 150+ people in it) made was touching"
"Thank you for all the birthday wishes! I had a great day yesterday. I am lucky to have the best fans in the world...."
"But I couldn't focus on the racquet, so I really don't know how I was feeling the balls. Right now I'm happy with the prototype and plan to keep playing with it here,".
"Well, I think it was a match where I had to sort of just fight to come through and hope get over the finish line sort of thing. I was playing really well at times, and then sometimes it was maybe a bit up and down. But, you know, assessing the performance overall, I’m very happy,”
“It’s good to be back and playing pain free. I don’t know, my mind’s good. I was in a good place while I was playing, so it felt nice to win at the end.”
Q:So perhaps just a little bit of rust at the start there or during the match just because it was your first match in a while?
RF: Yeah, I mean, I guess so. I guess you could call it rust even though I have played in Hamburg and Gstaad. I’ve had my matches. Then again, we haven’t been on the hard courts for quite some time.
I’ve had a tough last few weeks and months, so I mean, I’ve had to fight many things lately. It’s more than just the rust on top of it. Things are going well for me now, you know. I’m playing freely. I’m hitting the ball okay actually.
I was quite surprised how well I actually did hit the ball tonight, so that’s a good thing hopefully for the next round too.
Q:Roger, the conditions were cooler than it’s certainly been in a while. Did that affect you at all?
RF: No. Actually, not so much. I think it was actually for better tennis, to be quite honest, because the ball doesn’t fly so much. You can control it better.
So I was happy how conditions were. It wasn’t really cold. I mean, it was cooler for Cincinnati, let’s be honest. But the whole year has been somewhat cooler. If you look back in Australia, it was colder. Many of the clay court tournaments were colder as well. So it’s been a tough year, if you consider all those factors in.
Even Hamburg, I started to play once really late at night, and that was cold then too at the end.
Q:And did you like the opportunity now to have a day of rest?
RF: I think in my position right now it’s good to have a day off, even though I could play tomorrow, no problem. God, I’ve played so many matches back to back to back. I mean, six days in a row and more.
In practice, I’ve just gone, before playing my first round match, I’ve played every day since Wednesday also. So I’m used to playing every day.
But to be able to reassess my game, look forward, prepare better for the next round, I think it’s good to have a day off right now.
On playing with a new racquet…
RF: I just felt like, you know what, I’m going to play with the old racquet through the US Open right now, and I’m going to do more racquet testing when I have, again, some more time after the US Open.
Yeah, I was playing for a month with the black one, but it’s a prototype. At the end, I just felt like, you know what, right now I feel like I need to simplify everything and just play with what I know best.
I have too many things on my plate right now. So I just said, I want to definitely do my racquet testing and play more with the prototype, but right now I just wanted it to be about forehands and backhands and nothing else.
