WTA Cincinnati - Petkovic takes out Kvitova again
German Andrea Petkovic scored her second consecutive win over Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in as many weeks to reach the quarter-finals of the Western and Southern Masters in Cincinnati.
Petkovic, the No.9 seed this week, began with a 5-1 lead and never looked back against the No.6-seeded Kvitova winning 63 63.
Kvitova talked about not being 100%. "I played badly, made many mistakes, but she played well," she said. "In the second set I was a little dizzy and had cramping in my stomach. I may have been a little tired or something... I don't know what's wrong. I have a week off now, I hope I'll be better for the US Open."
"I've said it before - Petra and I are good friends. We always talk," Petkovic said. "She has asthma or something, I'm not sure, but she struggles when it's really hot and humid. I told her afterwards I hope she'll be fine for the US Open.
"She's a great girl. She stayed the same after all her success. I respect that."
"Actually I really like the court. I played two times on the Grandstand and it was never full. Court 9 was actually more full than the Grandstand," she said. "In a tournament like this with so many great matches, I wouldn't know how to make the schedule myself. So it's fine. As long as you win, you don't care!"
Petkovic next meets former world no. 3 Nadia Petrova, who hit nine aces in a 63 63 win over Christina McHale, the young American who beat Caroline Wozniacki earlier this week.
Also moving into the quarterfinals were No.16 seed Peng Shuai,a 63 62 winner over Shahar Peer, and No.13 seed Jelena Jankovic, who struggled past No.7 seed Francesca Schiavone, 63 57 64. Jankovic leads Peng in their head-to-head series, 6-2, although Peng has won their last two meetings, including one this year at the Australian Open
